Today at Exemplars in Leadership, we learned best practices on leadership from some of Orange County's most prominent voices:
Peter Krauss, President & CEO, Terran Orbital (Keynote)
Julie Sokol Chief Technology Officer, OCVIBE
Tawanda S., Chief People Officer, Din Tai Fung North America
Rod Hanson, Co-Founder & CEO, Cityside Fiber
Hosted and moderated by Greater Irvine Chamber of Commerce's Dave Coffaro, President & CEO. Thanks to the team Kristin Simpkins and Laura Perdew for all your hard work. The event was sponsored by Hoag Health System.
As the closing speaker, I shared insights and takeaways from the day which included:
1 - Build a culture of TRUST
2 - Allow challenges, mistakes and dissent from the team
3 - Create a CIRCLE of SAFETY
4 - Communicate, communicate, communicate (and then communicate some more)
5 - Listen, listen, listen
Peter Krauss emphasized that the CULTURE has a PROFOUND impact on productivity, efficiency, morale and retention. He quoted Mel Robbins' "leaders bring the weather," meaning YOUR energy sets the emotional climate.
Tawanda S. concurred: "Make it safe for people to make mistakes. If others see you punishing folks for mistakes, they won't take chances." She emphasized the importance of developing your people and talent. Allow them to FAIL FORWARD. Develop and delegate!
Julie Sokol, as OCVIBE's CTO stated that it is imperative to innovate. Stay curious and learn continuously!
Rod Hanson said your culture is the foundation of trust. Step back and allow people to do their jobs. Lean toward transparency yet know when to hold back. Allow people to dissent. Run quarterly offsite meetings and do post-mortems on those meetings.
Peter said there is no such thing as a perfect leader. You need to be the RIGHT leader for the situation and outlined 9 leadership styles, from visionary, to servant, to transformational and more.
